The degradation of the environment continues at an alarming pace. Living with the idea of humanity's imminent self destruction is like being on a sinking ship. Rather than sink without a fight, we should make our best effort to patch the holes in the ship by moving society closer to sustainability. The first section of this entry is called "Problems with..." covers major problems with mankind that are the result of our government's incompetence, which in turn is the fault of the negligence of individual citizens living under this government. The description of problems is three parts factual data one part strongly held opinion or argumentative analysis.

These problems seem unfixable, but, as explained in the section of this entry called "Feasible Improvements for...", if individual citizens become more responsible, they can make a positive impact on the government which can then begin to solve some of humanity's major problems. These proposed solutions or "improvements" are feasible and endeavor to bring society as close as possible to sustainability. Murry Gell-Mann, the Nobel Prize-winning physicist, defined sustainability as "living on nature's income rather than its capital".
