Blog - August 23, 2006 - Hummer

I’m an environmentalist and one of my son’s favorite trucks is a toy Hummer. He understands perfectly that I detest the toy, but this enhances his enjoyment of it because not only is it fun to play with, but he can get a rise out of me, too. It seems that no matter how much sense and logic you throw at my son (and most adults for that matter), he still wants what he wants and that’s it. The attitude is, “You’re asking me to deprive myself of something that I want. And I just can’t be bothered with all of this logic that you’re giving me, so I’m just going to get it, damnit.” Everyone’s sense of entitlement outweighs any logic. It doesn’t help that boys between the ages of two and seven are attracted to anything real or imagined that has an internal combustion engine in it. But why did it have to be the most egregious vehicle on the road today? A Hummer's gas mileage is as low as 10 miles to the gallon. People who drive SUV’s can always and do claim that they need the space for their “gear,” but with a Hummer that explanation is insufficient. Hummer owners have a special personality that mixes unconcern for the environment with ignorance and a vain need to be admired. They suffer from Affluenza. They are effective in winning the admiration of five year olds, and probably some other people who have attained higher age levels, but are stuck in the five-year-old range in terms of maturity.
