Learning

There comes a time at five or six years old
When you’ve developed and you’re growing bold
Replace the tricycle and training wheels
Discover how a new two-wheeler feels
You ride and I go running down the street
I run beside your bike holding the seat

You beg me to slow down and don’t let go
Because you know the faster that you go
Increases the impact when you wipe out
The wisdom that I share, you tend to doubt
That going fast makes balancing easy
On this difficult point you must trust me

A skinned knee from a fall brings you to tears
It shrinks your courage and strengthens your fears
You shouldn’t be ashamed if you are scared
Fear is a feeling all of us have shared
Fear began with the dawn of creation
The instinct provides self-preservation

But hearing that I let go of the seat
And on your own, you’ve ridden for ten feet
The thrill of it catches you by surprise
Like bursting colors during a sunrise
Your courage starts to bloom like a flower
Inspiring your next thrust of will power

Correct imbalance with the handle bars
Be careful when you share the road with cars
Feel the force as you lean into a turn
Then “starting off” is one more thing to learn
Focus, look straight ahead and go faster
With practice, it’s a worthy skill you’ll master
