Headwall

We skied a place called Tuckerman’s Ravine
Late in the season of twenty fifteen
Inherent dangers caused me some concerns
There were no lifts, you had to earn your turns

We hiked the first leg at a rapid pace
A two-point-five-mile climb up to the base
Three hundred people had hiked there that day
To ski or watch the daredevils at play

I went aiming to ski the top headwall
The top was open due to good snowfall
Carlos refused to be forced into it
We argued and decided best to split

The climb up the headwall is rough and long
It is so steep that plenty could go wrong
Ascending skiers follow the same track
I climbed with skiers in front and in back

My first try ended in regret and fright
An avalanche descended to my right!
This river made of snow was ten feet wide
It wasn’t fast, but I was petrified

Half way up with my stomach in a knot
I chickened-out and skied down from that spot
I found Carlos, he’d gone a different route
He’d made it to the top and skied “The Chute”

Approaching the top on my second try
I stopped to watch a few skiers fly by
They launched off from a jump known as “The Lip”
A twenty-five-foot drop began their trip

Surprised I was to find that the descent
Was simpler than the uncommon ascent
This giant bowl’s the place to ski off-piste
It is the steepest skiing in the East
